B is for Courage

Imagine you are in an alternative universe and after a big night of partying with your alternative universe friends you roll out of bed and go to the local diner in search of coffee and a eggs, ham and a muffin soaked hollandaise sauce. Further, imagine that your waiter was a little softball team from Minneapolis known for spirited base running.

You order a cup of coffee. Your waiter, the softball team, comes over and places a big mug in front of you and begins to pour the coffee. In a flash you realize that coffee is actually a metaphor for courage. (This is obvious now, but a the diner in the alternative universe it takes you a second to pick up on the equation: coffee=courage.)

As the cup fills up you think to yourself, this waiter sure has lots of courage. And still he fills up the cup, right to the brim it seems. He smiles and keeps going, spilling the brown liquid all over the table. You want to shout, “stop spilling the courage!” but something stops you, perhaps you want to find out just how fare this will go.

There is coffee on the table and the floor and spilling all over you. Though it is hot it doesn’t burn. You look up and the softball team waiter smiles politely as the courage continues to pour and pour and pour and eventually the pools on the floor become ankle deep and suddenly the entire diner is floating in a flood of black courage. Other diners smile as they lazily float by.

That is what this season is going to be like.

A wise person once said that life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage. This year the whole world is going to come apart at the seams because the B-Squad has an endless pot of courage and is serving second and third helpings at no charge.

Take this week’s preparation game. You give me the snow, I give you banner attendance. You give me doubts, I give you George at the plate. Give me a straight line wind, I give you a raging river of courage. And then I give you a beer.

It’s like these guys have been eating lion hearts in the offseason. Heaping plates of beating hearts ripped right from the chests of actual lions. That’s all I’m saying.
