Everyone is talking this week about the shiny new hard drive that Mr. Jobs wants us to carry around. This hard drive makes phone calls! Browses the Interweb â„¢! Makes a wicked flourless chocolate torte! And so on.
I was going to wait in line for one of these devices but (shameful work promotion alert!) as I write in my first-ever article at MarketWatch.com, there are much more qualified folks than I waiting in lines across the country. In particular a fellow named Greg Packer who is a professional at waiting in line and being quoted in the media for waiting in line. This guy has got B-Squad like instincts! Getting press for something strange and unimportant! Being large and unattractive and kind of gross! Having a website!
So the next time we whip up our humble publicity machine for the storied B-Squaders, it probably makes sense to drop Greg a note. He’d have a welcome spot on the bench, holding a can of Grain Belt Premium Beer, cheering the hapless B’s and scouting the field for press. It would be an honor to have him quip about the game, securing our footnote among his footnote to the massive publicity machine that is our culture.
I’m somewhat surprised that the papers didn’t send folks down to cover the game against the Wells Nadsmen. It was a game of grit and passion. Some amazing defensive work and a few exciting home runs to keep the interest up. Tommy B stepped to the plate for the first time this year and got a hit, propelling him to the top quartile of batsmen.
After the game we retired to the local watering hole and enjoyed watching several people smoke their first cigar. Cape voting returned and I was honored to be selected for pitching, purchasing and perhaps the first real act of coaching in the history of the team (let us never speak of it again).

Jim, there is no hard drive in the shiny new phone.
The article on MW is classic JEB. I look forward to seeing more. I tried to get FN to let me right a road side food column…. as Product guy I was declined. We will see if a new role can’t change that thinking!
BTW, I took the low road on the iPhone. I just ordered it on Apple.com and choose to wait my 2 to 4 for it to come.
I hope to see more JEB columns on MW soon!
